Why does it matter?

Welcome to the second chapter of this course. In this chapter, we'll be discussing why access to information matters. We will consider a number of reasons why access to information is a positive and beneficial step for many varying sections of society.

By the end of this chapter you will be able to:

  • Make the main arguments in favour of access to information
  • Engage with (and challenge) the most common objections to access to information

First, let's turn our minds to the arguments against access to information. We will return to this later in this chapter.

What are the main arguments against access to information? Which of these are credible and which are not? How would you try to answer them?

Be honest with yourself! There is no point in pretending that there are no good arguments against access to information. You will hear them as soon as you start campaigning.
