Role of NGOs
There are different ways to promote and protect human rights. These include:
- human rights education for communities (building awareness around rights);
- factfinding and monitoring;
- influencing policy and law making;
- running public campaigns and mobilising communities, including mobilising the international community, boycotts, working with the media, holding demonstrations;
- using the courts;
- using human rights commissions or other mechanisms.
NGOs can play an important role in all these situations. For example, NGOs can send reports to special rapporteurs and working groups established by the UN on specific themes, and in this way putting pressure on their own governments.
