Read the essay by Professor Issa Shivji and consider the following two exercises:
(a) 'Some people say that the right of peoples to self-determination is exhausted meaning it has no validity, once a country has gained its independence from colonialism.' Do you agree? Why? Give concrete examples from your own country or region illustrating the implications of accepting or not accepting this argument.
(b) 'Some say that the expansion of the meaning and concept of the right to life to include right to livelihood, shelter, education, etc - in short decent human existence - shows that the traditional division of rights into political/ civil and socio-economic is meaningless and kept alive only for ideological reasons.' Discuss.
